Telangana Government Accelerates Urgent Repairs for Singur Dam to Ensure Water Security

The Telangana government has prioritized urgent repair and safety works at the Singur Dam, with Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy directing officials to accelerate rehabilitation measures to protect water supply and irrigation infrastructure.

During a high-level review meeting at the state secretariat, the minister emphasized that the safety of the Singur project is critical because it serves as a major drinking water lifeline for Hyderabad while also supporting irrigation in surrounding agricultural areas. Authorities were asked to carry out immediate technical interventions and inspections to ensure the structural stability of the dam.

Concerns about the reservoir were raised by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), prompting state officials to initiate follow-up measures. The irrigation department has been directed to conduct sonar tests and underwater surveys to identify hidden structural damage beneath the water surface. These inspections will help engineers assess the condition of the dam without having to drain the reservoir, which could disrupt water supply and irrigation operations.

Technical assessments conducted since 2025 reportedly identified issues such as cracks in the embankment, erosion along slopes, and damage to revetment structures, raising concerns about long-term safety if repairs are delayed. In response, the minister instructed officials to complete the repair work on a war footing within one working season to avoid disruptions to agricultural activities and prevent a possible crop holiday.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the Singur canal lining project, where about 9 km of a 13-km stretch has already been completed. Officials have been asked to finish the remaining 4 km by June 26, ensuring efficient water distribution through the irrigation network.

The Singur reservoir plays a significant role in Telangana's water management system, storing roughly 29.9 TMC of water and supplying 6-7 TMC annually for Hyderabad's drinking needs, besides supporting irrigation in nearby districts.

By prioritizing repairs and strengthening safety monitoring, the state government aims to safeguard the structural integrity of the dam while ensuring uninterrupted water supply and agricultural irrigation across the region.
