Tesla's 'Coming Soon' Poster Hints at Imminent India Launch in Mumbai
Real Estate Mumbai:Just days before its official debut in India, Tesla has dropped a 'Coming Soon' poster on its X handle, with 'India' prominently mentioned on it. This move has generated a lot of buzz among car enthusiasts and industry experts alike. Tesla's first showroom in India will open in the 'City of Dreams,' Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, a prestigious business district.

The Elon Musk-led firm has sent out select invites presenting the inaugural event on July 15 as the 'launch of Tesla in India.' This event is expected to be a significant milestone for the company, marking its official entry into one of the world's most populous markets.

Industry experts told the AP that the Austin-headquartered company has already shipped in its first set of cars, apparently Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs, from its China plant. Tesla last month took on lease 24,565 square feet of warehousing space in Lodha Logistics Park in Mumbai for a period of five years. This strategic move indicates the company's commitment to establishing a strong presence in the Indian market.

Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy last month stated that the electric carmaker is not interested in manufacturing cars in India but is keen on establishing showrooms in the country. This decision has sparked some controversy, with US President Donald Trump calling out Elon Musk for opening a showroom in India. Trump said that if Tesla were to build a factory in India to circumvent that country's tariffs, it would be 'unfair' to the US, according to the AP.

Elon Musk had said in April last year that his visit to India had been delayed due to the company's heavy obligations. Despite these challenges, Tesla has continued to make significant strides in its India expansion.

In another important development, EV giant Tesla on Friday received a go-ahead from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to display vehicles. This trade certificate from the Andheri RTO will allow Tesla to go for test drives and sell its cars, ending months of speculation over its entry into the Indian market.

Now, Tesla is all set to inaugurate its showroom in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex business district on July 15. According to PTI, a senior RTO official said that they issued the trade certificate to Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited, the Indian arm of the Elon Musk-headed firm.

The trade certificate has been issued under section 35 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules and authorizes unregistered vehicles to be legally operated on public roads under specific conditions. The certificate is valid for five years and also allows car display and exhibition, delivery runs, and workshop usage. This development is a crucial step in Tesla's strategy to attract Indian consumers and establish a strong foothold in the market.
