A Thane court has acquitted a 46-year-old man accused of illegally erecting birthday congratulatory banners for political workers without municipal permission, citing multiple lapses in the police investigation.

The main reason for the acquittal was the multiple lapses in the police investigation, including the failure to seize the actual banners as evidence, lack of CCTV footage, and no independent witnesses examined.
The case was registered under sections 3 and 4 of the Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1995.
Mahesh Palvankar, the then officiating officer of the Uthalsar Division Committee, filed the complaint against the accused.
The court noted that the investigation suffered from multiple defects, including the failure to prove the essential ingredients of the offence beyond reasonable doubt.
