The main reason for the suspension of Zepto's licence was the discovery of significant food safety violations during an inspection by the Maharashtra FDA, including fungal growth on food items, improper storage conditions, and failure to maintain cold storage temperatures.
The inspection at Zepto's Dharavi outlet was conducted by Food Safety Officer Ram Bodke, Minister of State for Food and Drug Administration Yogesh Kadam, and Joint Commissioner Mangesh Mane.
Zepto violated the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, particularly in terms of food storage conditions and maintaining cold storage temperatures.
Zepto has initiated an internal review, is closely monitoring the situation, and is taking all necessary corrective measures to ensure full and swift compliance with regulatory standards.
The Maharashtra FDA is responsible for enforcing food safety regulations, conducting inspections, and taking action against businesses that fail to meet regulatory standards to protect public health and maintain consumer confidence.
