Navi Mumbai Achieves Record Property Tax Collection of INR 876 Crore in FY26
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has achieved a landmark in property tax collection, recording a record INR 876 crore during the financial year 2025-2026. This impressive figure surpasses all previous annual collections since the civic body's formation and is attributed to a combination of enforcement measures, digital outreach, and incentive schemes designed to boost compliance.
The collections, achieved over the period from April 2025 to March 2026, represent the highest annual recovery since the establishment of the civic body. Officials attributed the performance to a coordinated effort involving structured recovery campaigns, taxpayer engagement, and the introduction of a time-bound amnesty scheme in the closing weeks of the financial cycle.
One of the key initiatives was the Abhay Yojana, implemented between early March and the end of the month. This scheme offered a 50% waiver on penalty charges for property owners who cleared outstanding dues in a lump sum. The amnesty covered residential, non-residential, industrial properties, as well as vacant land, and significantly contributed to increased collections in the final weeks of the year.
A significant share of the total recovery was recorded during March, when over 28,800 property owners paid approximately INR 192.81 crore. To facilitate this, tax collection centers remained operational on weekends and public holidays, enabling taxpayers to complete payments within the deadline.
Data indicates that a total of 2,25,576 property owners paid taxes during the year, reflecting a rise in participation. Of these, around 61% opted for online payment modes, while 39% used offline channels. The civic body had expanded its digital payment infrastructure, enabling transactions through multiple online platforms to improve accessibility.
The NMMC also deployed data analytics to identify defaulters and streamline its recovery strategy. Targeted communication campaigns were carried out through SMS, WhatsApp, and RCS messaging, supplemented by direct outreach and field-level follow-ups. In addition, an artificial intelligence-based calling system was used to contact defaulters and prompt timely payment.
Among administrative zones, Nerul ward recorded the highest collection at INR 182.09 crore, followed by Koparkhairane at INR 163.40 crore and Ghansoli at INR 150.11 crore. Other wards, including Turbhe, also contributed significantly to the overall collections.
Officials indicated that leadership and administrative planning played a crucial role in strengthening the recovery process, with a focus on transparency, technology integration, and continuous engagement with taxpayers. The approach has led to improved compliance levels over the past two financial years, culminating in the current record performance.
The latest figures highlight the role of digital adoption and targeted enforcement in strengthening municipal revenues. With property tax remaining a primary source of income for urban local bodies, the improved collection performance is expected to support infrastructure development and civic service delivery across Navi Mumbai.
