Navi Mumbai Sees Surge in Property Tax Collections Under Amnesty Scheme
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has reported a significant surge in property tax collections, amassing approximately INR 81.34 crore from 15,092 property tax defaulters under its ongoing amnesty scheme. With the financial year-end deadline fast approaching, the civic body has intensified its efforts to recover pending dues.
The amnesty scheme, introduced to encourage property owners to settle their outstanding tax liabilities, offers a 50% waiver on late payment penalties for those who clear their dues in a single payment. The deadline for availing this scheme is set to expire at the end of the current financial year, leaving only a limited window for defaulters to benefit from the concession.
Civic officials have reported that total property tax collections for the financial year 2025-26 have reached around INR 755 crore as of late March. Out of these, 2,14,900 property owners have made their payments, with approximately 61.5% of the transactions completed through online platforms and 38.5% through offline channels. This reflects a growing trend towards digital payment systems in Navi Mumbai.
Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has urged the remaining defaulters to take advantage of the amnesty scheme before it expires, emphasizing the positive response from residents. The NMMC has also accelerated its tax recovery drive, employing a combination of digital communication and on-ground follow-ups to enhance compliance.
To facilitate ease of payment, the municipal corporation has extended operating hours at tax collection centres, including weekends and public holidays. Collection centres are now operating with extended hours, remaining open until midnight on the final day. These measures are designed to accommodate working professionals and ensure broader accessibility for taxpayers.
The property tax department has implemented technology-driven measures to streamline the collection process. These include online payment systems, SMS alerts, notices, and direct engagement with defaulters. Officials have noted that these efforts have improved the efficiency of the collection process and increased participation in the amnesty scheme.
The scheme applies to residential, non-residential, industrial, and vacant land categories. Taxpayers are required to clear their full outstanding dues for the current financial year to avail the penalty waiver. The NMMC has made both online and offline payment options available, including access through its official portal and a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot service.
The ongoing drive underscores the effectiveness of targeted incentive schemes in boosting municipal revenue collection, particularly towards the end of the financial year. With a substantial portion of the dues already recovered under the scheme, the final days are expected to see increased activity as remaining defaulters seek to benefit from the penalty waiver.
