Navi Mumbai to Hold Street Vendors Committee Elections on June 4

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation will conduct elections for the City Street Vendors Committee on June 4, following the framework laid down under the Maharashtra government’s street vendor election rules. The election process relates to the constitution of a 20-member committee, of which eight positions are reserved for elected representatives from the street vendor community.

Voting will take place for three of the eight vendor-member seats. One seat reserved for women in the general category has attracted four candidates, while 14 candidates are contesting for two seats in the general category.

Four reserved-category seats have already been declared elected unopposed after only one valid nomination was received in each category. These include one seat each for Scheduled Caste (Women), Other Backward Classes (Women), Minority (General), and Disabled/Divyang (General).

One Scheduled Tribe (General) seat will remain vacant as no nomination was filed for the category during the nomination period.

According to the civic body, scrutiny of nomination papers under the Navi Mumbai City Street Vendors Committee Election Programme 2026 was conducted on May 20. Following the review process and objections raised during scrutiny, two nomination applications were rejected, including one each from the minority and disabled categories.

The withdrawal process concluded at 5 pm on May 27, during which seven candidates withdrew their nominations. Of these, five withdrawals were from the general category, while one candidate each from the minority and Scheduled Caste categories also opted out of the contest.

The municipal administration stated that election-related staff training had already been conducted on May 21 and all operational preparations for polling had been completed ahead of the voting date.

Election Returning Officer Ajay Sable appealed to all eligible street vendors whose names are included in the electoral roll to participate in the polling process on June 4. Vendors have been asked to cast their votes at the polling centres designated for their respective municipal divisions.

The City Street Vendors Committee is constituted under provisions governing the protection and regulation of urban street vending activities. The elected vendor representatives are expected to participate in decisions related to vending zones, rehabilitation measures, licensing, and civic coordination concerning hawkers and informal traders across Navi Mumbai.
