Karjat Hydropower Project Gets Industry Nod; Green Concerns Raised
By GeoSquare News Desk · Published 2026-10-29

The Chamber of Associations of Maharashtra Industry & Trade (CAMIT) has voiced support for Torrent Power's proposed 3,000 MW Saidongar Pumped Storage Hydropower Project at Karjat in Raigad district. The project, which involves felling 32,490 trees, has sparked a debate between environmentalists and industry bodies.
Project Overview
The Saidongar project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening Maharashtra's power grid with pumped storage capacity. Located in the hilly terrain of Karjat, it promises to enhance energy reliability for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and adjoining industrial belts.
Industry's Stand
CAMIT emphasised that industrial development and environmental conservation must progress together rather than being viewed as conflicting goals. The chamber has urged the project developer to undertake robust forest restoration and compensatory plantation to mitigate ecological impact.
Impact on Real Estate
For property buyers and investors, such large-scale infrastructure projects typically signal improved connectivity, power security, and economic activity in the surrounding region. Karjat and nearby areas like Khopoli and Badlapur could see renewed interest from homebuyers looking for affordable options within commuting distance of Mumbai and Pune.
However, the final outcome depends on clearances and the implementation of green measures. A balanced approach could set a precedent for sustainable infrastructure development in Maharashtra's coastal belt.
