Pune Property Tax Crackdown: PMC Targets 4.62 Lakh Defaulters with Rs 18,166 Crore Dues
Pune, 30th April 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to initiate stricter action against property tax defaulters, illegal constructions, and properties outside the tax net as part of its efforts to boost revenue collection. Officials said around 400 to 500 properties with pending dues may face attachment proceedings in the coming months.
Despite offering an early payment rebate of 5 to 10 per cent to encourage timely payments, a large number of property owners continue to delay or avoid clearing their dues. In response, the civic body’s property tax department has intensified its recovery drive for the current financial year.
As part of the crackdown, authorities will conduct detailed inspections to identify changes in property usage and detect unauthorised constructions. Strict action will be taken against those found evading taxes. The civic administration is also stepping up its property seizure campaign. During the 2025–26 financial year, around 250 properties have already been seized, and their auction is scheduled for next month.
To augment revenue, the PMC will focus on bringing more properties under the tax net, particularly those that have not yet been assessed. Efforts are also underway to resolve property tax issues in newly merged villages through coordination with the state government.
In addition, housing societies that have availed tax concessions for initiatives such as solar installations, water recycling, and composting will be reviewed. If these projects are found to be non-functional, the tax benefits may be withdrawn.
The civic body also plans to expedite recovery by resolving pending legal disputes related to property tax through discussions. A decision on introducing an amnesty scheme is expected to be taken at the upcoming general body meeting.
According to PMC data, total outstanding property tax dues stand at ₹18,166.19 crore. The city has over 15 lakh registered properties, of which more than 4.62 lakh are defaulters as of April 2026. There are 322 cases currently under litigation, involving dues of ₹1,817.91 crore.
Properties in newly merged villages account for over 4.31 lakh units, with pending dues amounting to ₹2,542.15 crore. The PMC expects that stricter enforcement and policy measures will improve compliance and significantly increase revenue collection.
